Carhartt is a family-operated vineyard and winery. Husband and wife team, Mike and Brooke Carhartt, hand-craft the wines from grapes they planted in 1996 on a small, 10-acre vineyard site on the property and nearby 11 Oaks Vineyard. Rancho Santa Ynez, where the grapes are grown, has been in Carhartt hands since the 1950’s. Mike grew up farming the land and manages the viticulture while Brooke has been making the wine since Carhartt’s first vintage in 1998. Now, their son Chase, with enology and viticulture degree in hand, has joined the team and is involved in all aspects of the farming and winemaking. Together, they produce 15 different varietals, sourced from their own and local vineyard. Wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Rose, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot, Bordeaux and Rhone Blends, Cab Franc, Petite Syrah, and Zinfandel.
The Carhartt winemaking philosophy reflects the family's connection with the land, for it is truly the vineyard sites that lead to the finished wine's character. Sun, water, soil, climate – terroir – all integral parts, and all are weather driven. Thus, the weather vanes featured on their labels are those found atop each of the structures and barns located on the ranch and winery property. The rich history, the family, the connections remain...and all are reflected in the Carhartt's passion and commitment to producing quality wine.
Come and visit the family at the “redwood shack”, 2990 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos, on the corner closest to Hwy 154.
