Los OlivosFebruary's Focus - Los Olivos
Winery of the Week - Coghlan Vineyard & Jewelers

Los Olivos is one of the five towns that make up the Santa Ynez Valley. In 1861, the Overland Coast Line Stage Station was established in Ballard, just south of Los Olivos. The stage coach route ran from San Francisco to Los Olivos, then to Los Angeles and San Diego. Anticipating the arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway, Felix Mattei opened a hotel in 1887 now know as Mattei's Tavern, which accommodated rail and stage passengers making north and south connections in Los Olivos. Following the first whistle of the much anticipated engine, land auctions were held in 1887, creating the quaint village of Los Olivos.

The town was first named after a nearby ranch made up of 5,000 olive trees, called it Rancho De Los Olivos. On November 16, 1887, the Pacific Coast Railway line extension from Los Alamos was completed. The developers of the narrow-gauge railway first named their town El Olivar, then El Olivos, and finally Los Olivos. Los Olivos was connected by the narrow gauge railroad to points north as far as San Luis Obispo until the train made its last run in 1934. The southern terminus of the railroad was in front of Mattie's Tavern, where a stagecoach line continued over San Marcos Pass into Santa Barbara.

The town is near Highway 154, a scenic road from Santa Barbara over San Marcos Pass, through the coastal Santa Ynez Mountains. Los Olivos is renowned for its art galleries, boutique shops, restaurants and winery tasting rooms. In a nod to its small town charm, in May, 1986, Los Olivos was used as the location setting for the fictional town of "Mayberry" in the made-for-TV movie Return to Mayberry and several locations in town were featured in the 2004 movie Sideways..

Winery of the Week - Coghlan Vineyard & Jewelers

For three generations the Coghlan family has earned high esteem in the fine jewelry business. In 2009 they discovered another gem - their beautiful vineyard in the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara area. Drawing parallels to their family heritage, the Coghlan estate vineyard is one of the gems of the region and provides the perfect location to cultivate world-class grapes. These grapes are faceted into complex and brilliant wines.

The Coghlan family sources Pinot Noir grapes from acclaimed single vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, as well as Bordeaux and Rhone-varietal grapes from their own estate and other premium Happy Canyon vineyard. Their rigorous vineyard sourcing from quintessential wine-growing regions is the basis of their flavorful and complex wines.

As always, bringing beauty to the world is the undying passion of the Coghlan Family.
