Fiddlehead Cellars
As a Midwestern transplant, Chicago native Kathy Joseph was restless with her pre-med research in the early 80’s and took a leap of faith and moved to California with hopes of applying her degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry to wine industry research. With no research jobs to be found, her carefree demeanor instead led her to winery stints at Simi Winery (mentored by Zelma Long), Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Long Vineyards, and ultimately to graduate school in Enology at UC Davis. Five years at Robert Pecota Winery as Head Winemaker completed her training and, with her North Coast education under her belt, she boldly designed a company to focus exclusively on the lesser appreciated varietals (at that time) of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Her lack of funds led her to explore winemaking in the then lesser-known districts of the now-famous Willamette Valley and Sta. Rita Hills, and Happy Canyon for Sauvignon Blanc.
At Fiddlehead Cellars, our philosophy is simple: our love of winemaking must be reflected in every sip. With 22 years under her belt as the “Head Fiddle”, Kathy continues to stay passionately committed to producing silky, place-driven Pinot Noir and stylistic Sauvignon Blanc. Her Sta. Rita Hills Estate Vineyard, Fiddlestix, is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir and is touted as one of the best. Her Pinots from the Willamette Valley are equally expressive of their place. As a small, artisan winery, we devote hands-on care and attention to each and every barrel. We invite you to visit our Tasting Room in the Lompoc “Wine Ghetto” or consider our personalized Wine Clubs to experience the personal touch of Fiddlehead wines and the romance we have with Fiddlestix, Fiddlechix and Lollapalooza!
