Blending Wine With Philanthropy
With a tagline of “Blending Wine With Philanthropy” you know there’s something different about Carivintâs Winery in Solvang. The winery’s name comes from the Latin word Caritas and the French word Vin. Caritas means charity/philanthropy, and Vin means wine, of course. Blend the two together and you get Carivintâs. The winery’s labels are all beautiful paintings of rescued animals and other wildlife and contain stories about each animal on the back label. Profits from sales as well as fundraising events are donated to various groups such as Shadow’s Fund, Return To Freedom, and other non-profit groups. They’ve raised thousands of dollars and continue to push forward with more programs this spring.
But don’t let the beautiful labels and charitable aspects fool you; the wine is definitely the focus here. They are a bit different in that they aim to produce great wine without regard to recurring varietals - i.e. they may not produce 100% Syrah every year, but whatever blends they come up with will always be top-notch. For instance, the current selection includes a Gold Medal winning blend of Barbera and Tempranillo that has aromas of strawberry jolly rancher, pine/cedar, plum, and bubble gum, with just a touch of black pepper. When asked about this unconventional blend winemaker Fleet Hamilton replied “It tastes great, so why not? We’re not pretentious, everything’s fair game – it’s all about producing great wine, not paying attention to ‘the rules’.” They diverge from traditional tasting rooms in everything from the unpretentious wine-speak to the activities, board & card games, and they always have dog treats and a kid area. “When we were planning the tasting room we asked ourselves ‘what has stopped us from going wine tasting in the past?’ It was that we had kids who would not sit still in a tasting room, or we couldn’t take our dog, or that it was stuffy.” says Fleet Hamilton. “We wanted a place where we would want to hang out.”
So stop by, enjoy some wine on the patio, bring your pooch, and meet the owners: Fleet and Diane, and the lovely staff. Wine tasting virgins welcome.
