Ofer Shepher’s interest in the local wine community germinated very early on and continued to resonate within him throughout his college career. Weekend camping trips to the Santa Ynez Valley sparked an unyielding desire to pursue wine. He began his graduate studies at Davis in 2004, which propelled a move to the historic Gnesa Ranch in 2005. From that momemt forward, Ofer’s sole focus was the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and he spent the next seven years patiently searching for what would prove to be the ideal location to build his dream vineyard and winery. Spear Vineyards were planted in 2014 along the Highway 246 corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Among the highest elevation plantings in the appellation. Peaking at 900’ above sea level, there are currently 33 acres in production representing six different grape varieties on a multitude of diverse clonal, rootstock and soil combinations. Dedicated to sustainability, CCOF certified organic farming nourishes our soils, enriching the diversity and vitality of microorganisms and thereby improving vine health and wine expression. These cultural practices obviate the use of inorganic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Our in house farming team is guided by the collaborative direction of Ofer Shepher, Ben Merz, and Francisco Ramirez.
